Desert uniforms in three-colour desert camouflage were introduced in 1992, and were worn in operations in Somalia (1993) and currently in Afghanistan and Iraq. This 3-color Desert Camouflage Uniform (DCU) is colloquially called "coffee stains" by the soldiers wearing it. Three-color Desert BDUs replaced the six-color pattern of the 1990s,The Army Combat Uniform (ACU) is the current combat uniform worn by the United States Army.

It is the successor to the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) and Desert Camouflage Uniform (DCU) worn during the 1980's and 1990's. It features a number of design changes, as well as a different camouflage pattern from its predecessor. The ACU and its component materials are manufactured by the existing industrial infrastructure which produced the now replaced BDU.
